JP Rangaswami, Chief Scientist/Chairman, British Telecom/Ribbit will be discussing ‘The Rise of the Open Network: Or How I was David Isenberged into Submission’ during the eComm Conference on Monday, April 19th at 10:07am (Salon E).
JP’s sessions is based on “The Rise of The Stupid Network“, a seminal paper written thirteen years ago by a hero of his, David Isenberg. Since that original paper, the commoditization of hardware has continued apace: bits are no longer as closely coupled with atoms as they used to be. Software is more and more driven by platforms and communities, as the “invisible engine” takes root. JP will look at these trends from the perspective of Ribbit: its acquisition by BT, its integration into the wider community of BT, the role now played by the startup within the larger enterprise, and the lessons we can take from that experience.
Put iton your calendar people. It is sure to be a discussion you won’t want to miss.
The Ribbit team is headed to Barcelona (without me) to participate in the Mobile World Congress taking place February 15-18, 2010. The event is sure to be packed with cutting edge products and technologies that will shape the world of mobile computing.
We’ll be walking the show floor, capturing some shots of cool gadgetry, interviewing smart people, hanging out in sessions, drinking good wine with the locals and will be on hand when Crick Waters, co-founder of Ribbit, steps into a panel discussion on ‘Building the Mobile Cloud’. The panel takes place February 17th at 4:40pm and sitting on the panel with Crick will be:
We will have lots to share from Barcelona, and might just have a few more announcements coming next week.
If you have never been to Barcelona (like me), take a moment and flip through the Flickr set of MorBCN. I love experiencing cities through the eyes of the local people, and even more so when they use HDR to capture the vibrancy of their favorite spots. Love. Love. Love his work.
Last week at the Le Web conference, @charbax from the Tech Video Blog caught up to BT’s JP Rangaswami and Kevin Marks to discuss the Ribbit platform and how open APIs give independent developers, ISVs and global enterprises the tools and functionality to create new ways to communicate-with people, businesses, and software.
Summarizing JP, ‘our job is to show you the what is possible with the enabling technologies…your job is to do something with it’.
I like JP’s framing around telcos and how they should embrace technologies like Ribbit, VOIP, etc. He notes telcos core job is to help people connect with one another, and while there will always be some tension when new technologies surface that compete with your bottom line, telcos who are willing to embrace and add value to these technologies will not only see revenues incrase, but ensure they are doing the best job possible for their customers.
There is a little something for everyone here and hoping to lay our eyes on you at one or more of these events:
Microsoft PDC: November 17-19, 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. Join Mat Taylor, Joe Black, Wes Leonardo and Lisa Chand on the show floor in the Ribbit booth. Think they have plans to buy some drinks while there, so make sure to hit them up if you see them!
Dreamforce: November 17-20, 2009 in San Francisco, CA. We just announced the Ribbit for Salesforce 2.0 release so make sure you stop by our booth (#317) and ask the team to give you a demo of the voice to text record creation, SMS (text) messaging from the web and so much more.
Supernova: December 1-3, 2009 in San Francisco, CA. Join Ribbit’s Crick Waters and BT’s JP Rangaswami and Kevin Marks in three killer sessions.

October seems to be a good month for conferences with something like 80 of them going on around the world. The Ribbit team has made their choice and will be attending, speaking and socializing at the following events:
As the Ribbit team prepares for the rash of events coming this Fall, we thought it might be a good idea to have one resource you can check to see where we are headed, and hopefully, find some events that match your schedule so we can spend a little face:face time together.
That resource is the newly launched Ribbit Events Calendar. It is a collection of events we are attending and/or speaking at for the Mobile, Developer, CRM and Carrier markets, and includes goodies like such as:
Check it out, and if you are planning on being at any of these, let us know as we are always in the beer buying mood.
We have started to lock in a few events for the Summer/Fall, and as you can see, we loves the Flash as much as we loves sending the Chuck Freedman around the world.
The plan is to get out from behind our desks a bit more in the Fall (October-November), so stay tuned as more details sure to follow.
We are pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Sprout, the premier platform for developing and managing creative engagement marketing campaigns, to offer easily integrated telephony features for any online social engagement campaign built on the Sprout platform.
The combination of Ribbit and Sprout offers a new realm of interaction opportunities through integrated voice, SMS, click-to-call, call transcriptions, and other Ribbit-enabled telephony functions. The innate richness of voice and telephony enables brands and agencies to easily build higher levels of engagement and social awareness with their target communities, resulting in enhanced value, brand “stickiness” and desired community action.
Online communities today have a growing expectation for a closer level of interaction with the brands and personalities they follow, which presents continued opportunities for creative agencies and innovative brands to develop exciting campaigns with the latest technologies. The Ribbit communications platform, a carrier-grade telephony-plus-software infrastructure, is enabling people and brands to completely rethink the way they communicate and interact. With Ribbit, voice or communications-enabled media provides closer, more personal engagement for online communities. Available directly through the Sprout platform, agencies and brands now can dramatically increase the reach and effectiveness of their campaigns with easily integrated and feature-rich voice and telephony capabilities.
Quotes:
Ray Lee, Director of Platform Strategy and Business Development at Ribbit: “Ribbit and Sprout provide a powerful combination for creative agencies and brands. Integrated voice and telephony fundamentally change the way organizations can now interact with their target online communities, and enhances the relationship for better value on both sides. The new telephony features in the Sprout platform give agencies and brands the cutting edge tools to quickly and easily develop highly engaging, rich media campaigns – a big advantage in the highly competitive online marketing world.”
Carnet Williams, CEO of Sprout: “Agencies and brands are always looking for ways to make their campaigns stickier and more engaging. Our technology platform allows them to launch the most creative online campaigns and by adding voice with Ribbit, brands will experience an unprecedented level of value, awareness, and engagement. We are excited to see how this will be used in the next generation of online social engagement campaigns.”
TELEPHONY IN THE ONLINE CAMPAIGN
The creative possibilities of telephony integration with Sprout are limited only by the creator’s imagination, and can easily turn interested customers into live leads or transactions. For example, an innovative auto brand could develop a dream car-building application on their main website or other social media property, allowing user customization with all of the bells and whistles available. To continue the potential customer interaction, a stylish Ribbit-enabled “click-to-call” button could instantly connect the customer to a live operator to answer questions, schedule a test drive, or initiate a sale.
The movie industry is another example where voice and telephony integrated with online marketing campaigns can create better community engagement. Leveraging the interest of movie fans for frequent updates on cast news and movie progress, studios can integrate movie-themed widgets into any online campaign to distribute information and dynamic voice content. For example, a cast member or director could privately call a Ribbit number to send real-time, voice updates to all widget users. With Sprout functionality, fans could then forward the voice updates or transcriptions to their social network profile, and even leave their own comment for all of their friends to hear. News from the set, reaction to personal developments, updates from the red carpet – these are all personal, engaging updates that will keep fans coming back to the widget and brand for more information. The integration of voice and interactive communication dramatically increases the widget value to the user, and can significantly increase brand visibility, reach and stickiness.
TELEPHONY AT CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (CaT)
Catch Ribbit on June 3rd in the Metropolitan Pavilion Gallery at the Creativity and Technology conference, in New York. Featured demonstrations will include Sprout, Ribbit Labs, communications-enabled ad banners, and Ribbit augmented-reality calling. Hope to see you there!
We are also hosting a Ribbit Bayou on Tuesday, June 2rd at the Maritime Hotel, and invite you to join us for a drink on the roof deck with the Ribbit team.
While strolling the halls at FITC, I caught up with Steve Griffith who is a Professor in the Multimedia Department at Algonquin College (in Ottawa) and was pleasantly surprised to hear he showcased the Ribbit API to his students this past semester.
It was lovely to hear the words “Ribbit API” and “blew my students away” in the same sentence.
Another professor, John Willman, who works in the same department as Steve was there with us, and I think there is now a little competition going between them to see who can come up with the most creative way to show off this technology when school reconvenes in the Fall. I can’t wait to see what they do and just ask that there be no blood shed in the process.
I will say the highlight of my Algonquin lovefest was meeting Dan Morton (sorry Steve and John) who was one of Steve’s students this past semester. Dan’s enthusiasm around the Ribbit API was awesome and really makes me want to reach out to more universities and colleges to see how we can help shape future courses as we have a real sweet spot in the multimedia world. Big ups to Dan as well for participating in our little video montage. You rock buddy.
Ribbit’s Brian Coulter, Alain Mowad and David Markowitz are packing their bags full of water bottles (very important to stay hydrated) and heading Vegas for a couple of days (April 1-3, 2009) as CTIA and other wireless loving folks roll into that overly lit town.

They will all be roaming the CTIA hallways in between meetings, and if you really want to make sure you see Brian while there, your chances will be greatly improved if you head on over to the DIDX Dinner Party at Gordon Biersch on Wednesday night (just make sure you RSVP to save yourself a seat!).
And rumor has it all three will be at the Wipjam event on Thursday, April 2nd so pop over to that give them all a squeeze.
Remember fellas…water is your friend. Don’t forget to drink some while you are there.
